Why our pups are different...
With over 40 years as an Equine Reproductive Specialist for Rare Breeds, we at Zephyr Farms are not new to breed conservation. The Pyrenean Mastiff is an ancient and rare breed. We are honored to join the efforts of breeders who have gone before us in the preservation, protection, and promotion of this majestic breed. Our dogs have been imported from Spain, Poland, Italy, and the Czech Republic. We do this to bring into the United States a variety of pedigrees, genetic diversity, and to strengthen breed characteristics. We use the Breed Standard as our measuring stick. Our dogs live with us both inside our home and outside on our farm, joining in our activities, going on camping trips, to festivals, and traveling throughout the country. They have shown in AKC shows, worked as livestock guardians, estate guardians, some perform as service dogs, and all are family companions.
Zephyr Farms is a recognized Sponsored Breeder dedicated to upholding the PMAA Code of Ethics.
Good Health and genetic diversity are important to us At Zephyr Farms. Our dogs are tested for temperament, movement, confirmation, DNA tested for 241+ genetic variants for known health risks, identify genetic Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI), genetic Ancestor Loss Coefficient (AVK), AIS PennHIP testing and/or Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip, elbow and cardiac. Only dogs passing these health tests are used in our breeding program. We do make an exception for OFA hips that are Mild. These dogs are bred to better hips in the hopes we do not lose the breeding lines but attempt to improve those lines. We are striving to produce healthy puppies for a stronger breed.
At Zephyr Farms our dams are given the best care throughout their pregnancy. From vet visits, extra nutrition, on-call vet services, and more. Our Moms are well prepared to bring their puppies into the world. Once their due date approaches, Moms are integrated into their whelping area. At this point they receive daily messages and grooming care. During whelping, our Moms receive delivery assistance as needed.
Puppies begin ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and ESI (Early Scent Introduction) on Day 3 through Day 16. ENS is known to improve cardiovascular performance, stronger heartbeats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress and greater resistance to disease. EIS introduces puppies to new scents in a controlled way, improves scenting ability in later life, enhances confidence and stability as adults, reduces behavioral issues in the long term all of which supports a service role, detection role or “job specific” scents and increase the association with that scent, even at this early stage.
We use Puppy Culture Protocols as our socialization and training program specifically developed for puppies, from birth through the end of their critical socialization period. Based on the premise that the puppy always leads the learning, and puppies learn best by appropriate experiences at the appropriate time.
When puppies reach 7 weeks of age, we conduct puppy Temperament Tests. We will also assess each puppy’s movement, conformation, and vet checks. These evaluations will be available to help each family choose a puppy that fits you, your lifestyle and your needs as well as honoring who the puppy is.
At Zephyr Farms we are proud to be partners of Trupanion. All of our puppies go home with 30-days free pet insurance through Trupanion so you can try the program out. We want the best for our puppies and don’t want you to have to choose between your pet or finances.
